Food Stamps

The Food Stamp program provides monthly benefits, which allow low-income households to buy food. The amount of Food Stamp benefits received depends on the number of people in the household and the amount of monthly income determined after certain deductions are subtracted. Families that begin work or are working may be or continue to be eligible for Food Stamp benefits.

Please bring the following pieces of information for all household members with you:

  • Birth Certificates
  • Social Security Numbers
  • Verification of income of any kind
  • Verification of assets such as bank accounts, insurance policies, property, etc.
  • Verification of rent/mortgage
  • Verification of monthly utility expenses

Food Stamp benefits are issued monthly by an electronic benefits card. This card is used like a bank debit card. Each time during the month that you use your Food Stamp card the amount of your purchase is automatically deducted from your Food Stamp benefit balance. After each purchase your receipt will show the amount of your remaining Food Stamp benefit balance for the month. Training and assistance is provided to all Food Stamp recipients to learn how to use the electronic benefits card.

You may print out the Application for Food Stamps. Sign the application and fax it to (336) 727-2842, Attention: Food Stamps; or you may mail the application to Forsyth County Department of Social Services 741 N. Highland Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101, Attn: Food Stamps.

If you have questions about Food Stamps, call (336)703-3800.
