Synopsis and Discussion

High pressure continues to hold across the Triad this afternoon, though it appears to be slowly losing its grip on elevated air quality concentrations as cleaner maritime air moves in from the south. A few locations, especially in the eastern Triad, may reach Code ORANGE for an hour or two this afternoon with the beginning of Memorial Day weekend travel, but air quality levels should largely remain in the upper Code YELLOW range. The high pressure ridge slowly erodes over the Triad on Saturday as the tropical disturbance in the Atlantic approaches the Carolinas coastline. Skies should remain mostly sunny throughout the day, allowing for ozone levels to creep up into the low Code YELLOW range. Showers associated with the tropical disturbance should move into the area late Saturday and through Sunday, allowing for air quality levels to bottom out into low to middle Code GREEN range. For now, weather models indicate the tropical low pressure system moving away from the Triad early Monday. This should allow for the cloud deck to gradually thin out and air quality levels should rise into the middle to upper Code GREEN range as high pressure builds in from the west. (PAYNE)
