Library Board Chair's Message

Donna Staley Greetings from the Board of Trustees of the Forsyth County Public Library! By working with the Library’s staff and administration, we want to make your visits to the Library a success, whether you “visit” in person, over the phone or over the Internet. We believe that Forsyth County Public Library delivers the best library service in the Southeast, and it gets better every day.

If you visit in person, greet the staff; and if you are new, make sure you sign up for your library card right away. New things are always in store to enrich your visits at any of the Library’s twelve locations. The Library operates with a SIRSI automation system, and the web-based catalog not only displays cover art for items selected, but usually offers annotations and reviews. You can also manage your own account over the Internet, reserving books, checking any overdues, etc.

One big hit has been the Library’s Live Homework Help service offered through our website. It is a great free personal tutoring service for any student, grades 4 – 12. It is available one-on-one, every day, over the Internet, from 2 pm until midnight in English and Spanish. Young people love it and it has made learning easier for them.

Complimenting Live Homework Help is an exciting web service called “NCknows, Answers from Pros.” Through chat technology and your computer, a librarian leads you live to the answers you need, often using an Internet site such as NCLIVE. So…the Library is never closed! And your questions are answered fast.

Let’s talk about reading. The Library has received a National Endowment for the Arts Big Read grant to celebrate Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Written in the 1950’s, this dystopian novel portrays Bradbury’s view that reading and thought might be devalued in the America of the future. Readers may very well read Fahrenheit 451 and declare—the future is now! In Fahrenheit 451, “firemen” no longer put out fires, they burn books. Check The Big Read website link for more program information. Young adult author Chris Crutcher (Ironman, Stotan! Athletic Shorts, The Sledding Hill) will kick off The Big Read at the BOOKMARKS Festival on Saturday, September 13th at Historic Bethabara Park.

The Board feels that the Library is the hub of our community, and the success of the new Lewisville Branch Library, opened in November of 2007 shows once again,” Great Libraries Build Great Communities.”

You’ll read about new services, major events and other news, including the tantalizing Library Stumper.
