Tuesdays at Tanglewood: 2013 Summer Nature Programs

June

18 – A Day at the Beach - Kick off your summer vacation by learning more about the NC coast. Go on a treasure hunt and ID the shells encountered along the way. Get instructions for fun crafts using your own shell collection. Learn about birds, sea turtles, and other forms of life only found at the beach. Bring your swimsuit and go for a dip at the Tanglewood Aquatic Center after the program (regular Aquatic Center admission applies).

25 – Who Lives Here: Hummingbirds - Learn about the beautiful hummingbirds that inhabit NC and Tanglewood Park. Find out how to attract these intriguing birds to your own lawn or garden with properly maintained feeders and nectar-rich flowers. Children can participate in hummingbird crafts and activities.

9 – Who Lives Here: Monarchs - Learn about Monarch Butterflies and their amazing journeys. Become part of a nationwide network to support Monarchs by providing their habitat requirements in your own yard. Discover the best places to view Monarch migration as they make their way to wintering grounds in Mexico.

16 Wildlife of North Carolina - Volunteers with Forsyth County Wildlife Rehabilitators care for more than 500 wild animals a year. Join Liz Schmid as she shares details on the care of sick, injured, and orphaned animals. Live "education ambassadors" will join Liz for this informative program (Note: program is free, but tax-deductible donations including supplies and gift cards will be accepted. 23 Who Lives Here: White-tailed Deer - Gain a better understanding of one of the park’s most common wildlife residents and find out what makes Tanglewood (and your yard!) such an ideal habitat for North Carolina's largest wild herbivore. See examples of deer-resistant plants and find out ways to prevent deer-related damage to your lawn or garden. Play some "endeering" games and take part in a fun make-and-take craft activity.

30 – Who Lives Here: Dragonflies - Brian Bockhahn, NC State Parks, will teach ID, basic biology, migration, and the best ways to observe these beautiful insects. Play games and use natural materials to make your own sparkly dragonfly. (Note: This program is open to the public with no pre-registration required. Immediately after the public program, Brian will offer an "up-close" session for pre-registered guests only. See www.tanglewoodpark.org for details). Meet at Shelter 2 at 10:00 am

August

6 - Who Lives Here: Insects - Learn about the world of insects, their amazing lifecycles, and some of the unique structures they construct. A special emphasis will be placed on the fascinating social orders of bees, wasps, and hornets with tips on how to avoid painful encounters. Participants will have the opportunity to make a paper mache "hornets’ nest" replica that keeps yellow-jackets away.

13 - Who Lives Here: Owls - Learn the common owls of Tanglewood Park and how to distinguish through appearance, behavior, and vocalization. Find out why our largest owl resident is dubbed the "Tiger of the Sky" and our smallest the "Feathered Wildcat". Younger participants can make their own owl mask. Children ages 8 and above will have the opportunity to purchase an owl pellet for dissection.

20 - Who Lives Here: Snakes - View a PowerPoint presentation of our most common snakes. Hear myths dispelled and learn the important role that snakes play in the ecosystem. Get tips for avoiding encounters with venomous residents. Bring a camera for photo opportunities with "Cornelius", the friendly corn snake.

Programs start at 10:00 am and last approximately one hour. See dates for locations. Admission is free to registered RV campers and annual pass holders. All others pay gate fee of $2 per car/$8 per bus.

Participants should bring their own sunscreen, insect repellent and water bottle, and wear comfortable hiking clothes/shoes. Programs are designed for all ages, but children age 16 and below must be accompanied by parent/responsible adult(s). Organized groups please contact smithpb@forsyth.cc in advance with group attendance number.

 

General Park Information

  • Tanglewood is open daily from 7:00 am – Sunset (except on Christmas Day).
  • Pets must be under control of their owner and kept on a leash no longer than six feet at all times. All pets must have current inoculations for rabies. Pets must be kept and never left unattended. Pet owners are responsible for their pets using the designated waste area and cleaning up after their pets at the designated area.
  • Golf, Horse Stables, Hiking Trails and Accommodations are available year-around.
  • Gardens are open year-around. Blooming seasons vary.
  • Tennis activities are available from April to November.
  • Water activities can be enjoyed from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
  • Entrance Fee:
    • $8.00 - Buses
    • $2.00 - All others
    Annual passes can be purchased at the Front Gate or Welcome Center for $25.00. Entrance fees & Annual Admission do not include Admission to Special Events.
