Forsyth County Public Library - serving Forsyth County since 1906

Director's Message

Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin, Director In 2007, the Library embarked on its second century of service, and I took the opportunity to reflect upon what it must have been like in 1906 as the Library opened its doors for the first time. I imagined the incredible sense of excitement at the prospects of new treasures to be found. I thought of lives that would be changed because of knowledge found only in Library resources. Much has changed over the last 100 years, but one thing remains constant. I believe the same sense of hope, the same sense of promise that people entrusted to the Library a century ago, is still present today.

Throughout this report we will share the profiles of five individuals who will tell their stories of how the Forsyth County Public Library has made a difference in their lives. While the statistical section of this report tells part of the story, to really measure our success, it’s necessary to do so through the eyes of the people we impact every day.

Over the last year we have experienced strong growth in many of our established programs, and we’re pleased with the reception from the community for a brand new program dedicated to improving computer literacy. In our on-going effort to bridge the “digital divide,” we partnered with WinstonNet to offer a countywide program called the Computer Training Bridge. Supported by federal Library Services and Technology Act funds distributed through the State Library of North Carolina, the Computer Training Bridge provides high quality computer and Internet literacy training to anyone in the community, but places special emphasis on underserved citizens.

Our “On the Same Page” program featured nationally known local author John Ehle. During the fall of 2006, over 4,000 people attended programs centered on his novel, The Land Breakers. Last April, nationally known poet Tony Hoagland headlined our “On the Same Poem” discussion program, which again attracted a diverse, capacity crowd.

On the facilities side, we broke ground and began construction on the long-awaited new branch for the Lewisville community and completed a major renovation at the Kernersville Branch.

The state of the Forsyth County Public Library has never been better. With dedicated staff, expanding resources and a clear vision, we stand ready to continue our role as a place of hope and promise for a new century of Library users.
