With the help of other widows, a very nice woman who provides her with food and shelter, Koly finds a job, a home, and a new life with new hope. Even through a life filled with disaster and despair, Koly is courageous and shows that with perseverance anything is possible- even with obstacles that seem impossible to break.

Snail Mail No More Snail Mail No More by Paula Danziger and Ann M. Martin
This book is the sequel to P.S. Longer Letter Later. As the story unfolds, both Elizabeth and Tara Starr have gotten email! Elizabeth’s mother and sister have moved into a smaller apartment, and her father has disappeared while Tara Starr’s family is expecting a new baby. Both girls make new friends, but when tragedy strikes, they realize how much they depend on each other. I liked the drama, humor and warmth portrayed through this honest picture of friendship and trust.

The Number Devil The Number Devil by Hans Magnus Enzensberger
The Number Devil is about a twelve-year-old boy named Robert who hates math and his math teacher. He dreams about the Number Devil, a small red man who teaches Robert about the interesting points of math his teacher has never taught him, such as “Fibonacci Numbers,” “Pies,” and “Prima-Donna” numbers. This book was great because it told about mathematics in a way that I could understand, and it made it fun. There were lots of helpful drawings and the problems that were done in the book were printed large and in color. Another plus was that you didn’t have to do a single math problem.

Light From Heaven Light From Heaven by Christmas Carol Kaufman
Light From Heaven is about a boy and his family who are being abused by his dad. The dad cares far more for his farm than his family. I liked how the boy kept his faith strong and never got mad at his father.

The Fellowship of the Ring The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Fellowship of the Ring is about a legendary ring that has the power to rule the entire world if it falls into the wrong hands. The ring consequently has come to the hand of the hobbit, Frodd Baggins. This book is the beginning of the trilogy of the quest by this hobbit. The writing is so good that it pulls you in and grips you from start to finish. It has a bit of everything—adventure, nightmarish creatures, friendship and mystery.

Firesong Firesong by William Nicholson
Part of the “Wind on Fire” trilogy, Firesong is about the Hath family, the people of Manth, and the singers. The people of Manth are trying to find their homeland. Ira Hath is a prophetess and Bowman, Kestrel and Pinto are her children. Bowman and Kestrel are twins and their motto is “we go together.” Must they die to defeat their enemy? A wonderful fantasy novel—very strange and very detailed.

Dear Diary, I'm Dead Dear Diary, I’m Dead by R.L. Stine
Dear Diary, I’m Dead is about a young boy who lives with his stepmother and real father. His stepmother gives him a desk with a diary in it. The diary tells him everything that happens before it does. His friend is supposed to die tomorrow and he wants to save him and dies in the process. I love horror and I like to read things that seem to be real but you know are fake.

Gods and Goddesses in Greek Mythology Gods and Goddesses in Greek Mythology by Michelle M. Houle
Gods and Goddesses discussed the creation of the world, the fall of the Titans and the rise of the Olympian gods. It also explored Pandora’s Box which contained diseases, and death which was unleashed onto human kind. It helps us understand the beliefs of the Greeks, how they believe the world was made, why man has to suffer due to diseases and how kindness is always rewarded when shown to strangers.
