"Between the Covers" Writing Workshop: Your Life Story...

"Between the Covers" Writing Workshop: Your Life Story...

Tell your life story! Award-winning local writer Jennifer L. Stevenson will lead a workshop on writing memoirs. Join us for a Library-sponsered Adult Summer Reading Program, which is free and open to the public. The theme this year is "Between the Covers."

During the workshop, Stevenson will discuss the memoir-writing process and lead writing exercises to refine and develop life stories. She will also explore the difference between memoirs and autobiographies. No writing experiences in needed, but participants should bring paper and pen/pencil for the writing exercises.

“Every life is interesting – and every one of us has an interesting story to tell,” said Stevenson, who teaches writing at Salem College. “But we need to learn how to tell that story in an engaging way.” The workshop is ideal for writers of all experience levels. It will help writers who are exploring the idea of writing a memoir, those just starting one, and those who are already immersed in a project but want to refine their work.

Workshop leader Stevenson is a professional writer whose work has been published more than 2,000 times in newspapers and magazines across the country. Her work is also featured in the new book, Taking Flight: Winston-Salem in Prose and Poetry. For her coverage of civil rights as a Senior Staff Writer for the St. Petersburg (Fl.) Times, Stevenson was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, journalism’s highest honor.
