Houses for HoundsHouses for Hounds is a local program supported by a variety of animal welfare groups for the purpose of providing free dog houses to lower income Forsyth County residents.

The program began at the Career Center, where first-year carpentry students constructed the dog houses. This introduced the students to the use of power tools, and the finished product gave them something to be proud of and a way to give back to the community.

After two years, and more than 100 dog houses later, the demand for dog houses is much greater than had been anticipated. Already there are over 20 unfulfilled dog house requests, and the winter weather is striking the Triad.

We Need Your Help?

There is a dire need for medium to large dog houses that can accommodate dogs 50 pounds or larger. Do you have a dog house that is not needed and in good condition? Are you able to donate a new house or give a monetary donation?

Dog with House If you are able to help, please bring your dog house to the Forsyth County Animal Shelter or to the Forsyth Humane Society at 61 Miller Street, Winston-Salem (next to Whole Foods). From there, the houses will be distributed to deserving families.

If you are interested in obtaining one of these dog houses and feel that you qualify, you can submit a request online or call Carol Neal (703-2485) Monday through Friday during business hours.

The Houses for Hounds program was developed through the coordinated efforts of the WS/FC Career Center Carpentry Program, Forsyth County Animal Control, Fur-Ever Friends Adoption and Outreach Center, and the Forsyth Humane Society.
